April is Heartworm Prevention Month:

At Happy Life Animal Rescue, we’re all about second chances and tail wags — but we’re also about education. And with April being National Heartworm Prevention Month, it’s the perfect time to talk about something that’s not so fun, but super important for your dog’s health: heartworm disease.

🦟 What is Heartworm?

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially deadly condition caused by parasitic worms (yep, actual worms!) that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected pets — mostly dogs, but cats and other animals can get it too. It’s spread by mosquito bites, making it a major concern once the warmer weather hits.

The scary part? A single bite from an infected mosquito is all it takes to start the cycle.

💔 Why is Heartworm So Dangerous?

If left untreated, heartworm can lead to lung disease, heart failure, and organ damage. Dogs may not show symptoms at first, but over time they can develop:
• Fatigue after minimal activity
• Coughing
• Weight loss
• Labored breathing
• In severe cases, sudden collapse

And treatment? It’s tough, expensive, and hard on your dog’s body — which is why prevention is key.

🛡️ Heartworm Prevention is Easy and Essential

Here’s the good news: Heartworm is 100% preventable with regular medication. Your vet can prescribe monthly pills, topicals, or even long-lasting injections to keep your pup protected all year long. It’s a simple step that could save your dog’s life.

At Happy Life Animal Rescue, every dog in our care is tested for heartworm and started on preventative medication. We want every pup to have the healthiest, happiest life possible — whether they’re with us or in their forever home.

📆 Why April?

April is Heartworm Awareness Month, because it’s the start of mosquito season in many parts of the country. It’s the perfect time to:
• Schedule a heartworm test with your vet
• Start (or restart) your pet on prevention
• Share info with fellow pet parents to spread awareness

🐾 Adopting a Dog? Ask About Heartworm Prevention!

When you adopt from Happy Life Animal Rescue, you’re not just getting a pup — you’re getting a dog who’s been cared for, loved, and protected. We’re transparent about each dog’s medical history, including heartworm testing and prevention status.

Because nothing says “happy life” like a healthy, protected pup!
