Key responsibilities
  • Feeding and hydration: Provide fresh food and water according to each animal's dietary needs; monitor and record appetite changes.
  • Cleaning and sanitation: Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, litter boxes, and common areas; launder bedding.
  • Animal handling: Safely move animals between areas as needed; spend time interacting to provide comfort and socialization.
  • Monitoring: Observe animals for signs of illness or distress; report concerns and maintain accurate health records.

Reduce shelter stress and boost adoptability by keeping animals mentally stimulated and engaged. Every enrichment session makes a real difference.
On-site Animals Creative
Key responsibilities
  • Interactive engagement: Spend time with animals, offer toys, treats, and affection to encourage play and comfort.
  • Enrichment prep: Stuff KONG toys, prepare snuffle mats, licki mats, puzzle feeders, and simple items from cardboard or paper bags.
  • Scheduled setup: Prepare enrichment items in advance for use during off-peak hours or when staff is limited.
  • Maintenance: Clean and sanitize toys after use; restock supplies and flag low inventory.

Open your home to a dog or cat in need. Fostering provides stability and socialization that shelters can't replicate — and it saves lives. HLAR covers every expense.
At-home Animals High-impact
Key responsibilities
  • Daily care: Feed, groom, and exercise the foster animal; monitor health and behavior.
  • Socialization: Help the animal acclimate to a home environment, including people and other pets.
  • Basic training: Reinforce house manners and basic commands to improve adoptability.
  • Medical support: Transport to vet appointments as needed; update HLAR on the animal's progress.
  • Adoption support: Provide photos for listings and share insights with potential adopters.

Our adoption events are where matches happen. Event volunteers set the stage, care for the animals, and guide potential adopters through everything they need to know.

  • Setup and teardown: Transport and arrange tables, tents, signage, and animal enclosures; ensure areas are clean throughout.
  • Animal care on-site: Provide water, fresh bedding, and attend to animals' needs during the event.
  • Public engagement: Greet attendees, answer questions about animals and the adoption process.
  • Adoption guidance: Walk potential adopters through registration; coordinate meet-and-greets with staff.
  • Logistics: Monitor crowd flow, manage lines, and restock brochures and forms as needed.
