Top Fall Pet Care & Safety Tips for Dogs and Cats

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but it does come with a few unique challenges for our four-legged family members. Here are some fall pet care tips to make sure your dogs and cats stay happy and healthy through the season:

  1. Keep Up the Flea and Tick Prevention – Pesky parasites don’t disappear when summer ends. In fact, ticks thrive in fallen foliage like leaf piles , and fleas can linger in cooler weather. Continue your pet’s monthly flea and tick preventative and do regular tick checks after outdoor play. Don’t assume those crunchy leaves are harmless—leaf piles can hide ticks, mold, or sharp objects, and even acorns (which contain tannins that might upset your pup’s tummy if eaten) . A quick brush-off and inspection after hikes or backyard romps will go a long way for pet safety in autumn.

  2. Pet-Proof for Autumn Hazards – Fall brings some household and yard dangers we don’t see as much in summer. Be especially cautious with poisons and chemicals this time of year. For example, people often put out rodenticides (rat bait) as mice seek shelter in the cooler months – but these products are highly toxic to pets (even a small nibble can be fatal) . Many folks also change their car’s engine coolant in the fall; antifreeze (ethylene glycol) has a sweet taste that attracts pets and is deadly if ingested . Clean up any spills immediately and consider using pet-safe antifreeze. Outdoor toxins are another concern: fall is peak season for wild mushrooms, and while 99% of mushrooms are harmless, that rare 1% can be highly poisonous . Since it’s hard to tell fungi apart, it’s best to keep curious noses and paws away from any mushrooms in your yard. Also be mindful of late-blooming plants like chrysanthemums and dahlias – these autumn flowers are beautiful, but they can be toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten . In short, keep fall dangers out of reach: store yard chemicals securely, supervise your pet outdoors, and promptly dispose of yard debris that could grow mold or hide something yucky.

  3. Ease Those Back-to-School Blues – Have the kids headed back to class, or has your own schedule ramped up after summer? Pets can definitely notice the change. Our furry friends are creatures of habit, and they can become easily stressed when their routine is disrupted . Your dog might wonder why their favorite playmates are gone all day, or your cat might protest being home alone. To ease pet anxiety during this transition, try to keep a consistent routine for feeding, walks, and playtime. Include your pup in the morning send-off if you can – a quick walk to the bus stop or a car ride to drop off the kids can make them feel included (and tire them out a bit) . For cats, a few minutes of cuddling or interactive play before you leave, followed by a special treat or toy, can create a positive association with the new routine. While you’re out, leave some mental stimulation for your pets: puzzle feeders, treat-stuffed toys, or a comfy window seat for bird-watching can help banish boredom. If possible, arrange a dog walker or pet sitter to pop in at midday for a potty break and some company. And when you come home, greet your buddy with calm love and maybe an evening play session. With a little extra attention and understanding, your pets will adjust to the fall schedule in no time (they might even start looking forward to a bit of “me-time” during the day!).

  4. Halloween Prep: Keep It Fun and Safe – Spooky season is on the way, and it’s never too early to plan for your pet’s safety. Halloween can be a blast for the whole family, but some of our favorite festivities are potential pet hazards. Candy is a big one – those treats are tricks for pets! Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, and sugar-free candies or gum often contain xylitol, which can be deadly even in tiny amounts . Keep the candy bowl far out of paw’s reach (a sealed container up high is best). Remind any kiddos in the house not to share their haul with the family pet, no matter how convincing those “puppy eyes” are. If you enjoy decorating for fall, remember that curious critters might chew or knock over ornaments, candles, or string lights. Use pet-safe LED candles instead of open flames whenever possible – wagging tails and lit candles don’t mix (cats are notorious for tiptoeing too close to flickering flames). And if you plan to dress up your pet, do a little costume test-run: the outfit should not restrict movement, hearing, or breathing, and no small pieces that could be chewed off and swallowed. Many pets are happier in their “birthday suits,” so never force a costume if they seem uncomfortable. On Halloween night, trick-or-treaters at the door can be stressful or tempting for pets. Ensure your dog or cat is secure – maybe set them up in a quiet room with a favorite toy during peak hours, or use a baby gate to prevent door dashes when the doorbell rings. With these precautions, you can enjoy a howlingly good Halloween while keeping your pets out of danger. 🎃👻

  5. Keep Pets Cozy as Temperatures Drop – Fall weather can be unpredictable – sunny afternoons and chilly nights. Just like us, our pets feel the change. Make sure your furry pals stay warm and comfortable as the mercury dips. Now’s a great time to add an extra blanket or a plush bed in your pet’s favorite napping spot (off the cold floor and away from drafts). Cats especially appreciate a toasty spot to curl up – after all, who wants a cold, drafty “bathroom”? (If your cat’s litter box is in a garage or basement, consider moving it to a less chilly area, since cats hate cold bathrooms!) For dogs, consider a lightweight sweater or jacket for those brisk morning walks, particularly if your pup is small, short-haired, or a senior. Watch for signs your pet is cold: shivering, whining, or burrowing more than usual. Older pets may feel the cold in their bones – arthritis can flare up when it’s cool and damp, making joints stiff and sore . Help them out with a soft orthopedic bed and maybe a vet-recommended supplement or pain relief plan if needed. And remember, autumn days get darker earlier. If you’re walking your dog in the evening, use reflective leashes or collars (and maybe a flashlight) so drivers can see you both. Bonus tip: Fall is also shedding season for many pets. Don’t be surprised if Fluffy or Fido starts blowing their coat as they grow in a thicker winter one. Regular brushing will capture loose fur (before it decorates your house) and reduce hairballs for cats . Plus, grooming is a nice way to bond during those cozy nights in. 🍁🐶🐱

Support Local Animal Shelters This Fall – Join Our September Donation Drive!

While you’re busy enjoying autumn with your own pets, it’s also a perfect time to remember those animals still waiting for their forever homes. Fall is all about reflecting on what we’re grateful for and giving back. If you’ve been thinking about dog adoption or looking to support a cat rescue, this could be the season to fall in love with a new family member! Every adoption brings joy to not only the pet but also the adopter – that’s our mission here at Happy Life. ❤️🐾 But even if you’re not ready to adopt, you can still make a huge difference in a shelter pet’s life.

We’re excited to announce a special donation drive running all September in partnership with New York State Assemblyman Anil Beephan to support local shelters (including ours!). We’ve teamed up with all nine towns in his District 105 to collect much-needed pet supplies for homeless animals . Throughout September, you can drop off donations at any of the nine Town Halls in District 105 – including Amenia, Beekman, Dover, East Fishkill, Fishkill, LaGrange, Pawling, Union Vale, and Wappingers . That’s right, all across these Hudson Valley communities, folks are coming together to help pets in need. The items collected will directly support local animal shelters and rescue organizations caring for dogs and cats waiting for a happy home .

Wondering what to donate? Pet food, treats, toys, bedding, leashes, collars, and cleaning supplies are always appreciated. Even a bag of kibble or a few cans of food will fill some hungry tummies. Kitty litter, old towels/blankets, and grooming supplies are great donations too. If you prefer to give monetarily, our rescue and many others also welcome financial contributions – every dollar helps cover medical care and other needs for our rescues. No donation is too small; it all adds up to a happier, healthier life for the animals. And if you stop by one of the town halls to donate, snap a selfie and tag us! We love seeing our community come together for a great cause.

By supporting this drive, you’re not only helping to keep shelter pets fed, warm, and safe this fall – you’re also showing what our community is made of. Assemblyman Beephan and everyone involved have shown huge heart in organizing this, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Let’s keep that momentum going!

As autumn settles in, let’s embrace the season of giving and support our local animal shelters together. We hope these fall pet care tips help you and your furry companions enjoy a safe, fun autumn full of wagging tails, purring laps, and maybe a pumpkin-spice treat or two (pet-safe, of course!). From preventing little dangers around the house to easing your pet’s anxieties, a few simple steps will ensure a happy, healthy fall for all. And by pitching in to our September donation drive, you’ll spread that happiness to countless rescue dogs and cats awaiting their forever families.

Thank you for caring about pets as much as we do. Here’s to cool days, cozy nights, and lots of joyful moments with the animals we love. Together, we can make this fall a truly paw-some season for every pet in our community. 🍂🐾 Happy Fall from all of us at Happy Life Animal Rescue!
